What is Lookout?

Lookout, developed by Google, is a phone application that uses your phone camera to aid people with visual impairments. This app was developed to assist in daily tasks, such as reading documents, shopping, or household chores. While the app is continually being updated with new features, the current features are already incredibly useful.

How Can Lookout Help?

The first major feature of Lookout is the Scan Document mode. This feature allows you to scan documents and pages with your camera, which can then be magnified or even read aloud! All you need to do is take a picture of the document, and Lookout will scan the text and read it back to you. Quick Read mode also aids in quickly scanning papers such as mail, and the scan will provide a text-to-voice replay of whatever messages the scan picks up. The other two modes, Explore and Food Label, are still in beta-testing, but still have some useful functions. Explore mode helps to scan your surroundings, allowing you to identify all sorts of objects. Food Label mode can be used to scan food labels and barcodes, such as in grocery stores, in order to provide nutritional or cost information. Overall, Lookout is fantastic for those seeking an app to help them with daily visual tasks. The app is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German.
